Bringing Black LGBT Stories Into the Spotlight!

New York, NY –  “I’m From Driftwood” (, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that collects lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) stories from all walks of life, is announcing the launch of their Community Spotlight initiative; every story for one week will be by a member of a typically under-represented segment of the LGBT community to deepen our understanding of each other. The initiative will launch with their Black Community Spotlight on the week of February 6th.  This special initiative will give members of the Black LGBT community a chance to share their stories of triumph, tragedy, love, laughter, family, friendship and every day life. There are as many unique stories as there are important reasons to spotlight the Black LGBT community.

I’m From Driftwood founder Nathan Manske says:  “In order for every LGBT person to be understood and accepted, all of our stories must be shared. It’s our hope that by bringing black LGBT stories into the spotlight where they belong, that we can all move forward together.”

These intimate stories from black LGBT individuals will take you through an array of emotions: a bisexual woman is graciously lead out of the closet by her mother only to be asked whom she would look at walking down the street: Halle Berry or Denzel Washington; a 70-year-old gay man remembers the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and while he lost many friends, it brought the black LGBT community closer together; a transgender woman, accomplished actress Laverne Cox, shares an empowering story about the secret to overcome bullying, both as a child and as an adult; and a lesbian shares words of wisdom she received from an elder that dramatically changed her life less than 48 hours after hearing them. While the video stories have all been collected, members of the black LGBT community are encouraged to continue sharing their written stories on the website.

To celebrate the Black LGBT Community Spotlight, I’m From Driftwood invites you to join us for a preview celebration on January 31st at Gallery Bar from 6:30pm to 10pm.
