Music Of The Day: Tina Turner Nutbush City Limits

Nutbush City Limits” is a semi-autobiographical rock and roll song written and originally performed by Tina Turner in which she commemorates her ruralhometown of Nutbush, Tennessee. Released June 1973, shortly before her separation from then-husband and musical partner Ike Turner, “Nutbush City Limits” was the last hit single the duo would produce together. In the years since, “Nutbush City Limits” has been covered by a number of other artists and Tina Turner herself has also re-recorded several different versions of the song. As an unincorporated town, Nutbush does not actually have “city limits”, but it does have a “Nutbush—Unincorporated” sign on the highway.

Turner re-recorded “Nutbush City Limits” in a modern dance style—subtitled “The 90s Version”—for inclusion on her 1991 compilation album Simply the Best. Upon its release as a single, the song peaked at #23 on the UK Singles Chart and was a Top 20 hit in several other European countries. A different rendition, entitled “Nutbush City Limits (’91)”, appeared alongside “The 90s Version”. This funkier yet more laid-back arrangement is actually the one for which Turner recorded new vocals that were later remixed by producers Chris “C. J.” Mackintosh and Dave Dorrell to become “The 90s Version”. The 12″ single also featured an extended six-minute version of the dance remix, and a limited-release promotional DJ edition from the UK included still another take, “A Little Bit o’ Bush”. The corresponding music video for “The 90s Version” shows Turner recording the song in studio, intercut with footage from Nutbush, TN of the various landmarks mentioned.

Music Of The Day:The Isley Brothers ‘Footsteps In The Dark’

“Footsteps in the Dark” is a 1977 slow jam recorded by The Isley Brothers as an album track featured on the group’s double-platinum album, Go For Your Guns. It was the B-side to “Groove with You”, which reached #16 on the R&B singles chart. While the song didn’t chart on either the pop or R&B singles chart, it still garnered popularity initially for its laid-back grooves and the solemn lyrics (the song discussed infidelity) and later would be the basis of a sample fifteen years later in 1992 by rapper Ice Cube, who used the musical instrumental of the song for his breakthrough hit, “It Was a Good Day”. Both Footsteps in the Dark and It Was A Good Day were featured on the soundtracks of the Grand Theft Auto series of video games It Was a Good Day in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas while Footsteps in the Dark in Grand Theft Auto IV .
The song was reworked again by Black Milk on Slum Village’s self-titled album on the track “Call Me feat. Dwele”, and superproducer J Dilla reworked it into “Won’t Do” on his posthumous album The Shining. Singer k-os used a sped-up sample from the song for his 2002 single “Heaven Only Knows”.
Although lesser known, the song was also sampled by Usher on his second album “My Way” in the song “One Day You’ll Be Mine.” The song is also sampled on the Rhymefest song “All Girls Cheat”, although the portion of the song used is sung by Mario, and not a sample of the original recording.

BEST BREAKUP SONG EVER!Get into this live remix version of the classic ‘Tyrone’ by the brilliant diva of neo soul, Erykah Badu! The best part is when she ends the song with “BUT YOU CAN’T USE MY PHONE.” Erykah Badu is a genius and I will channel her the next time I date a frog.
